I just stuck mine on the heat sink without any pad or paste (heat sink needs to be flat). I do think sealing around the edge with RTV is a good idea (but I didn't do that either).

Back in the day the original Silver 5 was quite a bit more conductive, and was known to cause short circuits if it bridged CPU/IC pins.
This is the latest formula! Arctic Silver 5 (While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.) I would highly recommend this instead: Céramique 2 does not contain any metal or other electrically conductive materials. It is a pure electrical insulator, neither electrically conductive nor capacitive. It provides way less chance to produce funky PMD operation. The outside metal cans of the PMD's (2) TO3 output transistors are electrically charged, they are electrically isolated from the PMD's aluminum bottom heatsink plate by design. If shorted/semi-shorted to ground --- smoke goes the weasel!
