Must wait to start - ANything other than PMD?

Hey folks,
I have had a number of these trucks and am very familiar with PMD problems. I have this issue where my truck (K3500 - 1999) will fail to start occasionally but after 30 minuted or so it will start.

I had this problem in my driveway (cold) in the morning a couple of months ago and waited a while and it started. I did check codes and clear them and then the truck started cold. Then the problem happened a few times and I bought a new PMD and mounted it on the grill with an extension wire. I thought all my problems were over.

It has been about 2 months and now the truck has failed to start hot twice and after 30 minutes or so, it would start. I left the old PMD on a cooler on the intake and when this happens, I have tried the old one (gray one - supposed to be a good one). Anyway, no start on the old one either. So I waited and it started (twice). I am just wondering if this could be anything else like an injector pump issue. The truck will not hold at 200 RPMs (the IP test) and it has been like this for a long time.

I am going to pick up a used PMD from my brother and test it and have it ready to swap out when this happens again.

Any help or advice appreciated.

I have not had the chance to see how the 2000 rpm test works.
If I understand it correctly it is a test of the injection pump it's self.
If it can't hold 2K I think that means the IP is NG.

Yea, that is what I gathered. This one will not hold at 2000, but will drop below or run faster. I am hoping I have some time on it but realize I have to replace it one day coming.

So I great the bright idea that now, since it brought me home running, that I would switch to the old gray PMD and it started. I am thinking that this is not a PMD problem.

I did not mention that I check the fuel supply at the filter and it has fuel. The last time (only 2 times on this PMD) it failed to start, the water in fuel light came on after it was running a while. I took care of that problem and chalked it up to bad fuel. I am just hoping it is something silly and not the IP. Ip's I have had go bad usually surge and pour out black smoke. I have not heard of this no start-----wait---then start being an IP. ANy help appreciated.

Brainstorming:
A while ago the truck would make a "chirp" sound evry five minuted or so. I would not notice it until night when it was parked. The sound came from under the hood at the firewall on the passenger side. I thought it was a glow plug relay or something. Anyway this noise stopped before the no-start issue.

Then I have the "water in fuel" light that cam on before. I was wondering if there is a safety cut-off for water in the fuel and maybe I have a short or something in that device.

I wish I had a code to go by. It was just that time I hit the erase code button and the truck started, but there were no codes.

OK I went over to my brother's house and it did it again! So I switched out the Fuel Solenoid Switch from a running truck. Still no start. SO I listened for the switch to click when he turned the truck on - no click. To make sure I grabbed a piece of wood to amplify the sound. It clicked and then started. Something is keeping the FSS from clicking on. While I was having trouble, I tried a number of working PMD's to no avail.

On the way home, the "water in fuel" light came on and I nursed it home. At home, while the light was on it starts. There may be water in it because I cannot remember if I treated the rear tank, since the rear feeds the front. I guess it could still have water in it. I will purge and use the rescue 911 again, but the start problem???

What will turn off the FSS? Ignition switch? But there is the 30 to 40 minute wait and it works??? I will try and figure it out tomorrow. Any help appreciated.

Bob

I was wondering if I still have trouble, if jumping the FSS would cause problems. I know I had my other truck retrofitted with the mech. IP and I wired the FSS (fused of course) to a toggle and it ran fine. I am not sure if I would fry something by jumping it. Any ideas???
