6.5 dies with pto ?? Doesnt start

Hey guys, I read this forum looking for possible answers but no luck, so I am going to post here hoping one of you has an idea.

I have a 2002 3500HD with the 6.5, I use it as a wrecker, it has a dynamic wheel lift PTO. For a year everything was fine, when it started getting hot here in AZ ( i dont know if it has anything to do ) he injectors went out, then the PMD went out and the engine had to be rebuilt because the mechanic dropped a screw in the intake and well. To make a long story short ever since we replaced those injectors, the truck runs good for 45 minutes or so but when I start using the PTO and start backing up to a unit the RPM'S go up and down and the truck dies, and It wont start for an hour or so. One mechanic said I need a new injection pump, another one said that I need something to high idle while i am backing up to a car with my pto engaged, I spent too much money and dont want to guess anymore, does anyone have any ideas? There is no codes, and the truck does drive fine, when I use my PTO the rpms stay at idle 800, Any help would be great!

An easy way to check to see if you need a high idle mod would to have someone rev up the engine when you run the PTO. If it doesn't stall out when the engine is at high idle (1600 rpm) then you know thats what you need.

Its a really easy mod.

DIY - High Idle

but i doubt thats your problem.

I am guessing your PMD is bad. Do you have it mounted remotely?

Not remotely but its a brand new PMD not even two months! I head that with the OBD2 the high rev mod doesnt work because I need it as I am backing up to a car and not only when I am idling.

You are correct that it won't work when you are backing up. Sorry I missed that. It is very possible that the PMD is bad again though with the AZ heat. Your best bet is to try a known working one.

You don't need to take the intake off the replace it. You should buy an extension cable and relocated it. If you can plug in a tv you can replace the PMD

The funny thing is, that I been driving the truck all day and when it dies I poor cold water over the injection pump and pmd and it starts back up, If i dont poor the water it doesnt start just keeps cranking, Should I start with re locating the pmd and if that does not do it change the Injection pump ??

How many miles are on the truck? Has the injector pump ever been replaced? Is the check engine light on? What codes are you getting?

The PMD's are a common problem, and can fail quite fast in extreme heat when mounted on the injector pump. I recommend that you replace the PMD and go from there. If you have the same symptoms, chances are it is the injector pump.

Well, you cannot relocate the current PMD. Moving it outside is not going to revive it.

You can get a new PMD with heatsink and resistor and extension cable. If you are going to keep the truck for a while, given your location, I would get the Heath PMD kit with 7 yrs warranty. It is pricy but if you replace it once plus the original, you get your money back already. AZ is hot and no matter where you put it, it will be hot. Although I will probably still put it outside the hood since the ambient is more stable than inside the hood.
