93 6.5 Turbo in a 96 ?

I just came across a 1993 GMC 1 ton dually Cab & Chassis with a newer 6.5 Turbo in it (engine was supplied/installed at GM dealer a few years back, and has about 60000 kms on it only) 5 speed standard, Flatdeck, it has the Mech Injection Pump...am wondering if this Engine will work in my 96 GMC 1 Ton 6.5 Turbo/auto dually 4x4....and what all will I have to change (am guessing intake & Injection Pump at least) and what other headaches to expect ?..........is the 93 6.5 Turbo/Mechanical Injection Setup Desireable?....Pro's/Cons?...

I'd look the engine over real well. If the engine was installed in 2002 0r later it more than likely is a GEP optimiser 6500. The GEP engines don't have "GM" cast into the block anywhere. They are better than any GM engine.
In my opinion on mechanical vs. electronic injection pumps I prefer the electronic because they can be "Tuned" easier and can deliver more fuel than the 4911 ip in stock form. There is more to go wrong with the more complicated ds4 electronic injection. Both can have issues to deal with.

is there any way I can tell quickly if it is a GEP optimiser 6500 while it is installed in the truck?...as for the mech injection on this motor, is it reliable?....I won't be tuning/modifying anything, I like stock/reliable more than anything....I'm pretty new to the diesel stuff, have always been a gasser....Am still contemplating putting a gas in my 96....if I could get some info if the underdash harness is compatible, and I would just have to change computer and engine harness to convert to gas....I'd start tommorrow....I have a donor 96 GMC gas 5700 vortec, complete truck, runs/drives great, but was deemed "parts only" by our insurance (2nd total loss-can't be put back on the road)...

Depending what you want to do. If you want mechanical injection. To do the93 to 96 swap you will need all the electronics/ ECM /wireing harness/ transmission contoroler/plus the mechanical throttle pedal/cable assembly out of the 93.
Or you can use the 93 engine with the later model timing cover and your wireing harness with the DS4 pump and do a simpler swap.
But
If you have everything to do the mechanical swap. IMO that is the best way to go. You can tune it to make good power. Without all the electrical PMD, Optical sensor, ECT, ECT, BS issues with the DS4 pump.

If you want to convert to gas it would be best to have the Engine ' Trans/torque convertor complete wireing harness/ECM. There will be some issues with guages/ Tach/ gastank/ fuel pump and a few other things I cant think of right now that you will have to deal with.

To go from mechnical to electronic along with the timing cover the crank timing gear will also need to be salvaged along with the balancer if the mechanical engine doesn't have the reluctor on the crank gear.

Thanks for the info...I'm sure the procedure is posted on here somewhere for switching over the pump and getting it timed properly to the engine...is it alot of headaches/trouble?.....I can do a gas engine distributer change/timing with my eyes closed, but have never dabbled much with the diesels/injection pumps, etc....I've always been a gas burner.

On the passenger side front of the block there is a ledge near where the head and block meet. The GM engines have GM cast in the block there. On the rear passenger side face of the block[which you won't be able to see with the engine in the truck] The gm blocks have "GM" cast in. The GEP blocks will have the navistar diamond cast into the bottom front of the valley.
Sorry, no pics. My computer crashed recently and they are burried in my external hard drive somewhere. I'll keep looking and post when I find them.

Got a few pics of a gep block and heads. Another hint of aGEP engine is no "GM" stamped on the front of driver's side valve cover
