93 Chevy Not Shifting Into Overdrive

Hey Guys, I have not posted on here before but I always read the 6.5 posts and they have helped me through quite a few problems with the 93 Chevy 3500 with the 6.5 Diesel. I purchased this about 6 months ago and I finally got this running like a champ, new glow plugs, glow plug relay, lift pump, etc. Now that I am finally driving this I found that the transmission does not shift into overdrive. The transmission shifts nice from first to second then into drive but stays there. What should I look for??

is this two or four wheel drive -- and wht transmission is inthe truck -- late 700r4 or early 4l80e this would make a difference on why there is no overdrive -- one is due to an electronic selonoid the other is due to transmission pressure in in overdrive -- alos is it over drive that does not make it or the lock up convertor ??

Thanks for the reply hnbperformance. The truck is four wheel drive and I am not sure what transmission is in this truck but i will find out. The transmission does not even try to shift into overdrive, just stays in drive.

Since it's a one ton with a 6.5TD, it should have the 4L80E. Is your SES/MIL on? Have you scanned for codes?

As I told the OP, it should be a 4L80E. The 700R4 had become the 4L60 and wasn't put behind the turbocharged 6.5 or in one tons anyways. It's also not clear cut on the issue being electronic. His issue could be electronic or mechanical.

4l80e transmission with no ses light will set a code. possible overdrive lockup selonoid sitcking -- have replaced many a selonoid packs in these transmissions -- gas and diesel -- usually for stuck in second or third after warmed up -- but they usually start with no overdrive -- also check the power to the transmission -- overdrive selonoid is a diferent cricut into the trans from the cpu on a different wire but in the same bundle -- if it is internally but electrical I suggest to replace all internal selonoids since you have to drop the trans pan anyway -- easiest scenario have run across broken selonoid wiring around the valve body but still need to drop the pan anyways - god luck -- interested to know what you find

If it's a 4L80E which most likey it is scan it for codes.
You can have some trans codes and NOT have a check engine lamp on.

The list of trans codes are - - >
DTC 21 - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Circuit (High Sig.)
DTC 22 - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Circuit (Low Sig.)
DTC 24 - Output Speed Low
DTC 28 - Pressure Switch Manifold, Illegal Combination Detected
DTC 39 - TCC Stuck "OFF"
DTC 53 - System Voltage High
DTC 58 - Transmission Temperature High
DTC 59 - Transmission Temperature Low
DTC 68 - Overdrive Ratio Error
DTC 73 - Force Motor Current
DTC 75 - System Voltage Low
DTC 81 - Shift Solenoid "B" Circuit Fault
DTC 82 - Shift Solenoid "A" Circuit Fault
DTC 83 - TCC Solenoid Circuit Fault
DTC 85 - Undefined Ratio
DTC 86 - Low Ratio
DTC 87 - High Ratio

You need to connect a scan tool to see what the pcm[computer] is seeing. Without doing that, it is all guessing. The pcm could be the problem also. I just replaced the pcm in my 92 yesterday. It had been replaced once already and the used one I replaced it with was a replacement also.

I reccomend you take the truck to the best transmission shop in town or a GM dealer for an accurate diagnosis of the transmission malfunction(s).Not a time to make an uninformed or an expensive mistake !! IMO

unless it is slipping in any or all gears this will end up being a simple fix - just something that went stupid --he is right does not need a complete overhaul
