Does anyone know whether it is a good or a bad idea to buy a truck with a suspected bad or going bad harmonic balancer?
I was considering purchasing a 1995 Chevy 3500 dually 4x4, automatic transmission, 6.5 diesel with about 150k miles. I was told the harmonic balancer is going bad. Is $2,400 a good price for this truck? The body is fair condition as well as the interior. The engine sounds like it is running rough, however the seller claims that it is a belt.
If it is rough, then HB is bad which means the belt may be stretched.
This truck have an HB with a pulley mounted to it. The pulley is included in the serpentine belt loop.
Unfortunately, I could not give advice whether that is a good buy or not without looking at it.
If it is just the HB or HB/Crank Pulley that is bad, then it is not too difficult to change but we never know what else is wrong with it. The best bet is probably bring it to a mechanics who can take a look at it and put it on a lift. You can also check kbb to see the market value.
That isn’t from the harmonic balancer. Sure you can change that part cheap. Fixing the rough running engine may not be. How much blowby out of the oil filler tube did you get?
These trucks are going from $4000 to 5500 on ebay running good.

If it wasn’t for the glow plug system, bad ECT switch, nearly taking out the engine by turning on when ECT was at full temp and letting the glow plugs get blown in half it would have been a good ride. 50K after that disaster we pulled a head and Glow plug parts were still stuck in the pistons!
Glow plugs have come a long way since. I am one of the few who successfully and carefully used ether to start a 6.2 on a regular basis without the heads landing on the moon. When it is below 32 and the glow plugs don’t work again... 3 plug controllers, many sets of glow plugs, 3 starters, block heater and head from block heater coolant loss.
In any case figure you have at least $2500.00 to play with for parts with a selling price that low. I suggest taking your diesel mechanic with you to listen to the engine and see if it can be fixed for less than $2500.00. At 5000.00 spent parts and buying it, well this would start to exceed it’s value.
