Code Reader

I am looking for a cheap code reader for my truck. I have been browsing ebay a bit, and was wondering what you guys would reccomend. I see quite a few that also show real time data and come with a USB cable. Will these work with our trucks?

Thanks, Jacob

There is one I know of thatsquite inxpensive AND is compatible with our trucks. Its called car code. Its a USB type plug in with software for your computer that allows you to plug into the OBD port on the truck and the laptop. I understand you can even set TDCO with it. The website is a little confusing though IIRC.

Do you know what this thing looks like and where it can be bought? Are you saying that not all scanners can work with our trucks in reading live data?

Thanks

if you looking for just a basic code reader, i picked one up for $200 that does OBD II and OBD I(Ford, Chevy, Chrysler only) back to the early - mid 80s depending on make of the vehicle.

It's a very handy tool to have. This one can be connected to a PC but the USB to code reader cable is sold separately.

http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=126

that's the one i bought, and there are models above and below it.

sounds like a winner. the only reason i bought the one i did was because i work on all sorts of things, and since Autozone, advance, etc cannot read OBD I vehicles, that nets me more business.

The one your looking at may display the engine data, but will not let you make changes via the software it sounds like. i've never used a PC based scan tool so i can't confirm that. I know mine displays the data but i cannot change anything in the computer other than clear the MIL light.

To set timing you'll need a Bi-directional scan tool. Pretty much the truck can talk to the scanner, and the scanner can talk to the truck. Most general Code reader's are not bi-directional as you can't change anything in the computer save for reading codes and clearing the MIL only.

With a Tech II, for example, i can change RPM, shut the engine off via the ESO, turn indicator lights on and off(SES, STS, etc) run an injector balance test(shuts off one cylinder at a time) and god knows what else. I haven't had much time to sit down and figure it out since they are at my school. I messed with a tech II on an Impala at school and i could control pretty much everything including fuel pump on/off, cooling fan on/off and speed(high/low) and i'm sure theres more but again not enough time to sit and learn all the functions.

When Turbine Doc was at my place he had his Snap-ON MT2500 which is also a Bi-Directional scan tool when he adjusted the timing on my truck. I've only used a MT2500 once or twice to read codes myself.

I've been looking at autotap.com $199.00 either USB or Serial, friend bought several years ago, pleased with upgrades and service. Has good tech support.

The car code from obd-2.com seems like a good deal, and I can set my timing with it. The only downside is that it will only work on VPW vehicles, but oh well I guess. I think I am going to go that route.

Ive heard nothing but good about car code toher than its a bit confusing at first and the website really doesn't provide alot of user friendly info on its operation. However, once you learn how it all operates you could probubly spend hours just sitting in your truck toying with the systems. Individual cylinder shutoff is another option it has and I believe it also displays real time data. IE your bored and go down the road with the laptop watching your vitals on the laptop next to you. lol

That is what I am thinking, but I am having a hard time checking out of their website with paypal right now. I'm sure I will figure it out but oh well. I think it will be well worth the money. I also think that all up to current duramax's are VPW as well so this can be used on them too.
