nv4500 replacement -cheapest options- sm465? / manual trans options behind 6.5

There is no forum for the nv4500 trans so I hope that I am ok posting this here. Feel free to move this thread if you think there is a better place for it...

I am looking into buying a 93 chevy 3500 4x4 (w/ 6.5) that the current owner has removed the nv4500 trans, transfer case, flywheel, bellhousing and all the associated clutch parts out of to swap into another truck.

This truck is exactly what I am looking for, however, the nv4500 is pretty spendy (for a used trans and t case I am looking at min $1000) - I would just like to be able to get this truck running with a junkyard transmission and minimum $ I am not going to be towing and I don't necessarily see OD as a huge advantage, so ...

QUESTION: are there any other manual trans and t case options/ combinations that will be a direct (or relativley simple but not direct) swap into this truck, that are not going to be quite so spendy.

How about the sm465 ?- I just spent the last few hours searching the web, and I can't find any info on this specific question. Any other transmissions that I should look into? any web resources? I have seen high-impact.net but they don't provide the info I need.

What I really need to know is what other specific (common?, older? used?) flywheel bellhousing transmission transfer case combinations would bolt up and line up ?

ANY advice or help, knowledge is very greatly appreciated.

thank you!

If the truck you are buying has 4.10 rears then you are going to want to get a transmission with OD. If not that engine is going to be screaming down the road at 65. Your fuel millage is going to be really bad.

yes I believe that it has 4.10 rear but...

I am also sure that the 90 chev 3500 4x4 came with 4.10 and had the sm465 stock

Also I say this about OD because I am not an "ordinary" driver generally I am one of those 'crazys' you ocasionally run into who drives 55 all the time... sorry!

Will the sm465 bolt up? anyone know?

thanks for the input!

As far as I have read up, those sm465's will mate to the standard Chevy bell housing, which is the same as the 6.5 diesel. I don't know about the flywheel though, I'm sure somebody has some more information than me.

The NV3500 is a lighter duty transmission used behind smaller gas engines and I wouldn't trust it behind any diesel (being heavier) even the 6.5. The SM465 is a 4-speed manual trans and it would suck to lose that extra gear that the NV4500 has. I'd stick with the 4500 and just rebuild if you couldn't find a decent, used condition one.

Yeah cause even at 55 MPH without overdrive that truck will still be getting up in the RPM. The NV4500 would pay for itself in no time with fuel millage gain just cause of the overdrive.

with a 4.10 and an SM465, 55mph is likely going to close to your top speed lol. All kidding aside. With a 3.73 gear and a 400 auto trans in a 78 suburban with 235/75/15 tires i was running 3000 rpm at 65mph. The 6.5 will only run 400rpm faster than that and with you running 4.10s, 65 or 70 will probably put you at redline. I would not dare run my 6.5 or any engine AT redline for any long periods of time. I personally would get a new NV4500 or else you'll probably be kissing that engine goodbye in the near future.

thanks for the input so far-

If it came with the NV4500, I would certainly rebuild but like I mentioned the previous owner pulled it to swap into another truck (replaced auto) so the trans and associated components are gone.

The cheapest I can find a used chev/gmc nv4500 is around $1k (more than I would pay for the truck) plus associated parts and to me it is not worth it into a truck with relativley high miles already.

whereas I can go to a junkyard nearby and get the sm465 (plus transfer case and all the parts I would need) for $175

sm465 ratios : 1st is 6.56 2nd is 3.58 3rd is 1.70 4th is 1:1 I know for a fact that 1990 4x4 3500 gas truck came with sm465 and 4.10 rear, although I haven't driven one...)

All I am saying is that, because of the demand for the nv4500, I think it is overpriced (for me in this situation)

ANY other possible manual trans. / combinations that I should be looking into that will not require modifying the driveshafts?

thank you!

Surely you can find better than 1k. On craigslist or ebay or something. Define high miles? 240k on mine and id still pay to put a new 4l80e in mine if it went out.
