Kinda. If you want to get technical, the autos have a PCM and the manuals have an ECM.

PCM=Powertrain Control Module
ECM=Engine Control Module

one could even say the "C" in ecm or pcm stands for computer. it is the brain box. Ed

You could "say" that, but that's really not what it means. Even though that's what it is, if that makes any sence...

the "PCM" looks like the ECM except i only see one connection instead of three, and its shorter in length. Maybe its the passkey module that's under the drivers side dash for the Security feature(97+). the PCM/ECM does the same function.

PCM stands for powertrain control module(used in 94+ automatics).
ECM stand for engine control module(used in 94+ 5-spds).
TCM stands for Tranmission control module(used in mech injection vehicles with a 4L80E).

These trucks do not have two computers that control the drivetrain. The only one that controls the engine(and automatic if equipped) is the one behind the glovebox.

Did you look into the warranty thing i spoke of? You may want to see if its true. If it is you can get a new PCM under warranty. I wouldn't buy anything like this off of ebay personally, especially from a guy thats got only 1 feedback rating.

I emailed him early today about the PCM and he said the part number is 86BTSZM161280460

Can anyone decode it? Is it a VIN F or S type model etc. Looking for an upgrade to my S type ECU. He did refer to it as the ECM so I dont know what the deal is. Im waiting for the VIN number from him.

This is NOT an ECM or PCM, it is an airbag control module. DOT, NTSB and OSHA have mandated that airbag connectors be a bright yellow, it is a universal color code for airbag connectors used in the primary system.

He said it was a VIN F computer. So, does that work with my setup. His is a 1997 suburban 4x4 4L80E with vin F.

Would that be an upgrade for the vehicle in my signature?
