Fuel Mileage with a 6.5L Diesel Engine?

What can I expect for fuel mileage from a 2000 GMC 3500 Crew Cab 4x4 duelly. Highway, City, Towing 9500lbs.? Also how does this compare to say an 06 with a Duramax? How noisy is this engine compared to the Duramax?

Thanks, Kirk

I just hauled 11,500 via goosneck and 8000lb CNC machine and averaged 8mpg with an 04 duramax. I was not too impressed with the performance or mileage. I just wish Dodge made a better truck to match their cummins engines. They seem to pull very well.

the duramax engines are alot quieter than the 6.5 engines. my friends cousin owns an 04 Duramax and it sounds like a sewing machine while my truck rattles(i love it and wouldn't have it any other way). i've gotten in the high 20s on the highway unloaded doing 65. but thats with the 3.73 gears in the rear end. if you've got 4.10s then your mileage will be worse and it will be better with 3.42s. you'd want the 4.10s for towing tho.

12-18 mpg depending on me mostly. Engine noise is probably 3-5 times that of a Duramax. If you like the rattle, you'll like the 6.5

The Duramax and the 6.5 mpg is not that much difference from each other pulling or not - a stock d-max might be 1-2 more mpg pulling. However the Duramax has quite a bit more torque than the 6.5 so pulling will be an easier task especially up hills. There are some guys here that have some 6.5s that are quite impressive as far as power but if you take the typical power of a 6.5 with modifications and a stock 06 duramax your duramax will have more hp and torque and will be quieter. But again the duramax is quite of bit more $$$... decisions, decisions, decisions... It will be up to how much $$$ you have and want to spend.
