Electrical Problems

Today I was using my bosses trailer with a wench on it, and when removing the power cable (for the wench) from my battery it arched like a S.O.B. and left a decent weld mark on the metal on the inside of the engine compartment. My truck ('96 3500) still starts up fine and runs fine, but the oil pressure, fuel gauge, volt meter, and temp gauge are now not working correctly. Also when driving if I hit the brakes and have the turn signal on it kills just about all the power in the cab and turns the clock off. The only way I could describe what they do is to say the volt meter goes down along with the fuel and pressure gauge; then the temp gauge shoots up. Ive checked the batteries and the alternator all of which were fine. I haven't checked the fuse-able links that go into the starter yet but some of the guys at the parts store recommend checking there. So has anyone else had a brain fart like I did today and could maybe tell me where to look to fix my gauges?

Last time I tried using my bosses wench I was 20 something and he wound up cleaning my clock.

He divorced her a year later...

sorry, couldn't resist

X2 Grounding would be the culprit in this.

Check your fuses too. I've had a vehicle before that blew a fuse, and the interior light would come on when you popped the trunk, and go out if you pushed in the lighter. Go figure that one out.... changed a blown fuse, all was well.

Try running a new ground from the battery to the engine and to the body, also if you still have the positive spacer inbetween the positive cables, replace it or toss it and go with the bolt & nut trick

Almost sounds like a short in brake/turn signal wiring.

Well today I checked my grounds, all of them seemed to be clean and good. I replaced my alternator since it was still under warranty. I also replaced my brake light relay and turn signal relay. One of my heater lines was leaking (I caused it and I'm rather upset with myself over it) so I decided not to try an fire up the truck, tomorrow I should be able to get a replacement line from the dealership since none of the parts stores had a metal line like mine. And if the gauges are still acting up I'm just going to bite the bullet and take the truck to a dealership, hopefully it will not come to that.

Seemed is not good enough for grounds. Should remove, clean and re-torque. In cab grounds in your case would be important too. Under dash you should find at least a couple.

Also, check the resistance end to end on the negative battery cables. Not very likely but arching could have damaged battery cables.

Unless you have dealt with this dealer before and trust them, I expect they are just going to shotgun some high $ parts at the truck (PCM, cluster, etc). More troubleshooting may be beneficial if you can afford the time.
