1995 6.5 turbo boost pressure?????

Hello. i have 1995 2500 extended cab long box 4x4. When i bought it from the guy the driver was out so i replaced it. Truck runs good. It will be getting a 4" exhaust very shortly . I installed a boost pressure guage yesterday and found all i can get out of the turbo is 4psi (That's wide open and it slowly progresses to hit 4psi) . My question is, do you think the turbo is shot? If so what is the best replacement for it. I have tried with the waste gate sucked in and pushed out and the boost is the same. I also cannot hear the turbo even with no air cleaner. The turbo is spinning and the shaft end play is good but i'm not getting the boost i should . THANKS FOR YOUR HHHEEELLPPP. ROB

Rob,
Where did you install the guage probe(not really a probe)?
$ PSI is really low at WOT since mine gets 10-11psi with a bad TC.
Is the turbo getting the oil it should?
If you are running it in the driveway with no air filter, that does not necessarily mean anything(until you open things up)
Just wondering. I look forward to trying to help.

Mark

Welcome to the forum Rob..........

Troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures are listed in the STICKY areas above ^ - spend some time there, and go thru the diagnostic procedures, including the turbo\wastegate checks, give yourself more info to go on.

i installed the (probe) in the center of the air intake like i found in pictures on someone else thread. My wastegate accuator is shot. I've taken the truck up and down the road with the turbo wide open and tried the waste gate pulled closed (using a spring) and open and still can't hear any turbo cool sounds. I was just wondering if the stock exhaust was holding it back. I removed the cat and muffler with no change. With the waste gate pulled closed i get 2 to 3 pounds boost consitant driving 60mph.

Use a wire instead of the spring to TEMPORARILY tie your wastegate shut. Then go for a spin and see what the boost does. IMMEDIATELY remove the wire afterwards.

Also, get an EGT gauge before things start to get a little hot under the hood.

Well, you're ahead of the game with the recently replaced fuel system.

Your turbo is operating normally - those Boost levels at 60mph are normal, since you didn't indicate pulling a heavy load.

Most infamous symptom of turbo system malfunction is no power with heavy black smoke, which you also do not indicate.

At idle, unless you're a really big dude, the wastegate actuator should be difficult to move.

Vacuum there should be 15" - vacuum at the pump should be 25".

Not hearing the turbo is not criterion for judging functionality.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this is bad. If the coolant hose gets hard, then it means there's air in the system. No?
