Turn on ignition key. Does pink ? wire on relay have 12v? Other wire should be blue. Take a jumper wire and touch blue wire terminal to ground. Does relay now click? If it does, that is how the relay functions. The controller simply completes a circuit to ground through the blue wire. Sounds like the controller is fried. I would install a manual switch.
It is easy to miss, but unlike some other solenoids that use 12 volts to energize, the 6.2 solenoid uses a path to ground to energize it. Hope it works for you. Early controllers were a pia. I had a brand new one back in the day that stayed on too long and burned out a set of 9g glow plugs the first time I used it.
that sucks man...
i pulled the connector off the relay... wired pos and neg in with key to run and nothing.
when i got the solenoid NEW it had dust on it... looked like the terminals were dull. not the way brand new copper terminals should look. im thinking someone at parts store screwed up.
BUT will see. im going back tommorow to swap em since they ordered me a new one today.
i know why so many go manual glow plugs.
sadly i cant do that yet. my 6.2L is a wiring/vacuum nightmare so not wanting to add anything in to the chaos under my dog house...
one to many people have probed my van. LOL
however i hope i dont have to change glowplugs before i remove the engine to rebuild at diesel school. cause that seems like a pita.
swapped out relays. its getting power full tilt 12v constant / trigger etc... still not fiting up.
i pulled the trigger and ground wires off and hooked up my jumper clips. made the ground and hooked to 12v constant. then took jumper cable from battery to POS terminal and no click.
theres no way i can go through 3 relays and there all bad... and technically the way i have it hooked up it would work period.... im at a loss on this one guys.
ya solenoid... ummm nope... no click no nothing... its whatever... im honestly done playing with it... ill wire up a push button... i didnt want to since i have a wiring mess from hell under there and dont wanna add to it... but its whatever.
Just to make sure, you are ordering the proper glow plug relay for year of 6.2 van? A solenoid is just a heavy duty switch. Power goes to one of the large studs from the battery. One of the small studs on the front of the solenoid gets keyed 12v to it. The other small stud when grounded completes the circuit and allows the coil inside of the solenoid to pull the contacts together and energizes the other large stud on the solenoid which powers the other large stud that connects to the glow plug harness. The orientation of the small wires on the front of the solenoid is important. If you reverse the wires I don't think it will work. You can test the solenoid on a bench with just the two small lugs. One with 12v and the other to ground. I hope I have explained this well enough for you to understand it.
The other thing to know is that there are other solenoids that may look the same as your specific application but could operate different.
everythings hooked up.... im pretty sure my wires are right... but could be wrong.
on the old style glow plug solenoid does the 12V lead goto the right or left stud?
On the high current side , unless the solenoid is marked battery and load, which they aren't 99% of the time, it doesn't matter which way you hook it up.
we can end this thread with i dont know whats going on.... not to worried about it to say the least....
however. i will install a manual switch and replace glow plug solenoid with a ford starter soelnoid and call it good.
im done trying to chase the wiring gremlins and ill prolly delete most of the glow plug harness and keep it manual since that controller doesnt really help do anything for me if there manual.
also with the block heater plugged in i can get my van started after a couple times of cranking and the cylinders get some warmth in them. but it works for now.
Thanks for the help guys... i really cant understand why its doing this craziness even when i straight hook the solenoid up. maybe its a bad solenoid... but im done with the guessing waiting games.
manual switch is and always will be the easiest way to go. and ill make sure not to over glow. i know my glowplugs arent stock. but doesnt mean there not stock replacements. so ill just glow for 7seconds if really cold. for now i dont even need the glows.
Thansk agian!
new threads coming soon with whats this or that wire.... lol
update... still dont know why 4 glow plug solenoids wouldnt click... even when i directly connected them to the battery and ground...
however while going through my shed i noticed a i had a brand new starter solenoid from my 04 Lightning. so i have that wired in now with a push button... i glow it for 9 seconds then off... it doesnt need much since its plugged in all the time.
but figured id give a heads up... not to worried about it... but alot of the stuff that controls the glowplugs is gonna get pulled off now since its useless to me.
thanks agian for the help guys and maybe this thread will help someone in future.
