This morning, below 10 degrees F, my 'new' 89 van with 6.2 failed to start. The glow plug indicator lamp would flicker and I could hear the relay clicking in-and-out a couple times per second. Sometimes the relay seemed to hold for a second or maybe two, but not sufficient to start. Do I need a new relay, controller, or ??. And are these things located at the rear of the engine near the fuel filter?
sounds to me like your glow plug relay is on its way out. The controller will be located at the rear drivers side of the engine. The relay is mounted on the inside drivers side fender of the van i believe. someone correct me on that if I'm mistaken.
Relays and controllers are a common problem issue in these 6.2's. What people commonly do to save headache and trouble and to assure a proper and even more efficient way of glowing you can rewire a manual switch to the glow plug relay and have your glow plugs on a toggle or push button or whatever you prefer. There are tons of write-ups on here on how to do that. It is very very simple.
low battery voltage made my glow plug controller go haywire. check your batteries and all connections. diaric is right, i put a ground switch on the blue wire from the relay and now i have full control muuhhaahaha!
