OK - it's official - RPO UF3 high idle "switch" CAN be added by dealer

First off - PLEASE don't turn this thread into an argument about "high idle" vs. "elevated idle." If you don't know the difference, PLEASE search and understand what the two are before you post something along the lines of "all LMMs have high idle, or "how do I turn on elevated idle using my DIC."

Now then - I personally talked to a rep from GM upfitter today about retrofitting RPO UF3 - "High Idle Switch" into trucks that don't have it. This was in my response to a request for clarification about the information in this upfitter bulletin: http://www.gmupfitter.com/publicat/b...e_UI_82_D4.pdf

Here are the rules:

The truck must be a configuration where the option could have been ordered but wasn't. This basically means '08 - up 2500 and 3500 trucks with cruise control and LMM engine. 07.5 trucks cannot be retrofitted because UF3 was not an option offered for that model year.

To get the retrofit you must have the dealer contact GM Techline with the request. Techline will check the VIN to see if the option was available on that particular vehicle configuration. If so, they will arrange for a software download to the dealer and update the VCI for that truck.

Although the upfitter rep would not quote a cost, he did say it was his understanding it would be "much more expensive" than the original cost for the option which is about $200.00. The costs would include the dealer's time contacting Techline with the request, Techline apparently has a fee for the download and to update the VCI, the cost of the actual "software" which is apparently identified by a GM part number depending on what configuration / model /year of the truck is that would be charged on the RO , and whatever the dealer feels like charging for hooking up the computer to the truck to actually do the update to the BCM.

This is all the information that he gave me, and he said it shouldn't be a big deal for the dealer to do, however he said that it is up to the dealer if they want to go through the process, and neither the customer nor GM can force them to do it.

My neighbor has been trying to get this done for almost two years on his early '08 LMM. He is going to give it a try sometime in the next couple of weeks, and at least try to get a cost estimate. I'll update this thread with his experience.

HTH...

With ya on paying the 200 option from the start. I can't imagine what the darn dealer wants to do it.

How do you activate it? I've got it on my truck but have never tried to use it.

Put truck in park, set parking brake, press the "set" button on your cruise control.

Thank you for your hard work. I fully understand what you have done. Too bad for me with an 07.5 but still nice to get the low down. I fully understand the deal with reprogramming the BCM. Not as simply as on off items like one may do with EFILive. Those VCIs can be a real treat to get accomplished sometimes from what I here.

Again great info. Thanks
Brian

I will try it tomorrow. Why in the world should it cost $200 from the factory if all that is involved is programming?

If you already have it why would you try to get it? Inquiring minds want to know...

Now I understand - I thought he would be a test case...

My neighbor went to the friendly dealer he has been working with and showed him my information about getting this done. They essentially said NFW... but would try if he would pay the $110/hr for every minute it would take to do it, including all the time to contact Techline, etc. He decided to wait for awhile and see if anyone here tried it and how much it cost them first.
