Clean Exhaust Filter

My buddy has a 2007 6.6 Duramax. He was pulling a 20,000# camper. He had pulled the camper for over 1200 miles. At one point his clean exhaust filter warning came on. It went off after a while. It them apeared again and he lost power. It went from 60mph to nothing. Also his check engine light came on and is still on. Why did the truck lose power? Can any one help? Thanks

When the clean filter light comes on, the truck needs to be driven 20 miles or so over 30mph to regen the dpf. If he was towing, it should have done it while he was driving, unless he idled it too long while fueling up, etc...

If it doesn't clean the dpf upon driving for said amount of time, it will go into limp mode, so you can get it to the dealer. Great design, eh?

I've had one clean filter warning in the winter when I let it idle too long. It then immediately set off a code P101, in which it turned out to be a ecm update to fix that thrown code.

Are you using ulsd, or are you fueling up with low sulpher diesel? Using any additives? Do you have a scanner to read codes? If you are close to a auto zone tommorrow morning, you could have them read it and clear the code to see if that will get you back on the road.

If it goes to the dealer, they might run a manual regen if you can't get it clean running down the road. I wish I could help more.

We do not have the code reader now it is in Texas, we are in Regina Canada. What we did is put a lighter camper on the truck and the warning went off in about 50 miles. The check engine light is still on with about 1000 miles traviled. Fuel mpg is great 21.5 with out a load 10 with a load and the truck is runing good. On star says there is a exhaust problem but they didn't give a code. I am just wonder what is the exhaust filter? also he is running low sulpher. thanks

Two types of fuel out there, ultra low sulphur and low sulphur, the latter still available in some rural areas. You think you are running just low sulphur, if you are, there is your exhaust filter problem, sulpher soot blockage. LMM dpf's only like ultra low sulphur fuel. The check engine light means the ecm threw a code during your clean exhaust filter message, have a auto parts house use a scanner on the obd port and see what code it is, don't let them clear it until a dealer can see your code and fix the problem. Write down the code, most nice readers will tell you the reason, at least a ballpark, but not always specifically.

The exhaust filter is the diesel particulate filter after the cat, it stops diesel soot in itself, when the pressure differential and temperature get to a certain point it's the ecm's job to decide a time to do a regeneration, adding diesel fuel at the exhaust stroke to raise dpf exhaust temps and burn off the soot, sometimes it takes 20 or 30 minutes of driving down the highway to complete that. You can usually tell by the drop of mpg and a chlorine like smell, not to mention if you stop, the exhaust will be hotter than a mother, from one who knows. I think maybe that dpf didn't like the 20k you were pulling, multiple idle stops or the low sulphur fuel, if you could find any and that is what you are actually burning.

Have a blessed trip, sounds like you guys are delivering 5th wheel rv's?

All the more reason to take the DPF off, what's the point of having a diesel truck if it clogs up will working it! I'm glad I won't have this situation occur with my kids with me. Worth every penny, warranty or not! Chris
