Duramax differences?

OK I know its on this site somewhere, but somebody point me in the right direction.
I'm serious, serious about purchasing a dmax now and the last time I was on this sight was 2003-4 sometime. Now I come back and there is LB7's LLy's LOL's---whats the difference man. What's good bad?
Just looking for the right forum.
Hopefully next monday should see a Dmax in the driveway.
Matt

Are you looking for new or used? If you are looking for used you will be looking at LB7s from 01-early 04, 04.5-05 is the LLY. If you are looking for a new truck this is where it gets a little confusing. 06 is also LLY but it is a new design which is basically the same as the LBZ. Now having said that they put the 06 LLY behind the 6spd Allison in the 310 hp 605 lb-ft tq version until late Sep of 05. After that all Allisons had the LBZ (360hp/650tq0in front of it. You can still get the LLY with the manual, but it is rated even lower at, I think, 300hp/520tq.

As far as differences I'm not sure about all the changes from the LB7 to LLY, so I'll cover what I know and others can fill in or you can search and see what you can find. LB7 had no emission equipment unless it was in an emission critical state like CA. It also has the injectors in the valve covers. Half way through 04 they introduced the LLY. The changes I know of were an introduction of emissions equipment like EGR and catalytic converter. They also moved the injectors outside the valve covers and changed to a variable vane turbo. In 06 they made significant changes that can easily be found in this forum. I'll hit the highlights: redesigned intake, new turbo, lower CR and stronger block.

If your looking for used I would get and 01 to 04.5 with the LB7 engine code. I had an 01 and it served me great for 135,000 plus miles. Traded for an 05 LLY. MY LB7 got better mpg and towed a load better. Still have the 05 but an 06 LBZ is on the way while th e05 is on the way out. If your looking for new get the 06 LBZ.

You can see what I have in my sig (LLY). Get the LB7. Diesels weren't meant to have emissions crap on them. The greater the year number, the more sensitive the computers. Also, the LB7's programmers and plug in modules have the higher horsepower settings.

04.5's are LLY's... so just get 01-04.. make sure the 8th digit in the VIN is a 1 and you are good to go. There is more info in the FAQ in my sig.

Hello... new member here....considering a D/A . From what I'm reading the LBZ is the "better" of the Duramax engines??? Never had diesel before, so I don't know.

i dont know if you can call it better of the engines but the newest the LBZ is. i dont think you can call it the better of the engines because it has not been out long and only time will tell but with that said i'm waiting untill JULY AUG to get one for myself so i can give them some time and see how they are
