How Long Can I Idle?

Diesel rigs idle for hours while the driver catches some sleep. How long can you idle a newer Duramax without causing problems? What happens if it idles 8 hrs. with the AC running?

I know GM would never give approval for legal reasons, but I'm talking just mechanical/tech reasons.

Whachthink?

With a diesel, it is PERFECTLY fine... a gasser could give you some buildup...

I think it might be easier on stuff if you have the EGR plate in.

I thinking of giving up RVing to hoteling it, but I hate to be locked into planning every stop! I like to fly by the seat of my pants, and go where the road draws me, but doing that one could get locked out accomodations and need to sleep in the Dmax with the AC or heater running for 8 hours!

So you guys see no problems with it! Anyone done it? Problems? Big rig drivers say they use very
little fuel sleeping at idle. True?

Yes what he said. If you let a diesel idle for too long, the motor cools down too much, and is starts to not burn all the fuel. Some of that fuel ends up passing through the pistion rings, and ending up into your engine oil.

Dave, I was just kidding about that rv's are for ***** comment. Seriously though, why don't you get a small generator for the RV? It would be alot more efficient on fuel.

EGR will never open when idling so plate will not do anything to save truck during a long idle period.
