Resonator Plug Destroyed Turbo

Well I finally got around to posting this. I ordered a 64mm modified turbo from Mark at Danville Performance over a year ago (I believe it was the 64mm, so long ago I'm not positive) and kept putting off the swap as I knew it would be a big job.

A few months ago I was driving home from Walmart when all of a sudden my truck lost all power, started churning black smoke out the exhaust and was making a god awful squealing noise. I pulled over and opened the hood but couldn't see anything. Since I was only a few miles from home I decided to limp it home. The more I listened I thought the turbo was going out.
A few weeks went by until I had time to swap the turbo out. Finally I took a weekend and started the job. When I pulled the resonator I was shocked at what I had found. I originally had the resonator plugged but when I pulled the resonator there was no plug! There was however a big fender washer and a wing nut rattling around inside the resonator.

Apparently the bolt used to tighten the rubber plug had worked loose and dropped straight down into the turbo!

Now even though I needed to swap out my turbo I didn't want to have to do it like this! Plus I didn't want my old one destroyed before I had a chance to swap them.

I appreciate all of Mark's help in getting this job done. I highly recommend him if you have any questions about a Turbo upgrade, EFI Live tuning or generally anything Duramax related! His company Danville Performance is one of the vendors here.
Swapping a Duramax Turbo is a huge job and if I have any advice to give someone it would be have a second person help with it! A second set of hands on the ground would be a HUGE help while you're under the hood. I did it by myself and it took me all weekend sun up until sun down both days.
The biggest advice I have to give is if you plug your resonator with a pipe test plug BE SURE TO BOOGER THE THREADS!!! I still have mine plugged but the second plug I installed I used vice grips and clamped the threads into a mangled mess. I'm 100% positive this time the wing nut will never work it's way loose.

some say they notice more turbo whistle. the benefit is by getting rid of the resonator you dont have to worry about dirt/dust going in the engine if it cracks.

thats the main reason i went with a kodiac mouth piece, there is no port for the resonator. hate that it happen to you, but that is what i was affraid of happening to me before the mouth piece change.

I used the cap from Home Depot but I put a stainless steel plate under the cap so that it wont suck that plastic into the turbo.
