fuel filter losing prime

second time in a week truck wont start, first time leavin for work in the mornin wont start second time it started then died. got it started by pushin the primer on the fuel filter both times, took to dealer they r gunna put a new fuel filter housing on it. they think thats why is losin prime. the truck has 40000 miles on it. is there a way to get rid of that primer and use some other set up where it wont fail me, thanks

I had a similar problem when I switched to the new coalescing fuel filter in conjuction with running bio-diesel. I've run bio-diesel going on 3 years now and over 40,000 miles on this truck without issue. However when I switched to this new filter I was throwing a 1091 code which was 0 to negative fuel pressure after the filter I believe.
I fixed it by installing the AirDog 2 165 lift pump. Now I always have pressure at the filter. I added a gauge by simply removing the factory bleeder screw and installing a tee fitting, valve for bleeding on one port of the tee, and sending unit for gauge on the other port of the tee. When it's time to bleed the system I just crack open the valve and turn the key on till fuel comes out thenclose the valve.....easy enough! These trucks should have lift pumps from the factory imo.

been there!!

my wife called me when she was headin into work one morning and said it started then stalled out....long story short found out it was the fuel filter adapter, anyway i have 88k on the truck now and this was first issue, brought it into the stealership, its covered under the 100k warrenty, but i had the $100 dectuable, anyway i know its only gonna happen again down. IMO the whole fuel delivey system is junk, but i'd love to know of something to "easy" to do to switch the fuel filter set-up

this may be connected. when the new style filters came out a few months ago i.e. the new wix filters. i changed the filter and a few days later while towing our fiver after taking a break i started the truck up and it died. had to pump up the primer and it started. turned out to be the filter. got a new filter and no problems since. if you can pump the primer you have air. might be worth checking out.

diaphragm

theres a diaphragm in the "filter adaptor" that goes bad and lets it lose its prime.i dont know what internally can go bad on a fuel filter to let it lose prime, maybe the seal at the water sensor or screw-on end. not sayin it didnt happen to u, but maybe seal went bad?, and when u replaced filter......well, that also = new seal. imo if prime is lost its gonna most likely be seal, filter adaptor, or injection pump, god bless any of us that need the last one!!

I had the same problem and went with the DMAX Wrenchkit filter housing. He rebuilds and reengineers the internals and offers a lifetime limited warranty. The guy's name is Dale Gross and he is very helpful on the phone and will answer any questions. Nothing fancy but for $280.00 for a lifetime warranty, it beats the $837.00 the dealer wants for the stock housing. I've had mine on for about two months and everything is working fine. Website below if interested.
