GM 8.1 vs Ford v10

Hi all. I currently own a 2004 GMC 2500 with the 6 liter and I am looking to upgrade to something with more power for pulling. Being a GM man all my life I am leaning toward a later 8.1. But I have some friends that run Fords with the v10 and they are encouraging me to look into them. I have been doing some reading and the v 10 appears to be a good motor as well. So I am just wondering if any of you guys that have the 8.1 lokoed at the v10 before you bought your 8.1? Or maybe you have an 8.1 as yor own truck and maybe you drive a v10 as a company truck or something like that. I was just wondering about comparisons, real life experiences, or opinions. I don't want this to become a Ford vs Chevy bashing. Just real life honest experiences. I guess one reason I would consider a Ford is that our local dealership lost the GM franchise a couple years ago so now to get a GM truck worked on the closest dealer is 25 miles away. And the Ford dealer is still in town. So convenience is worth something I guess. Soplease don't crucify mefor asking the question but just wondering if any of you had any thoughts. Thanks a bunch.

I've never driven either but I know people with both and the 8.1 would definately be my pick.

I'm a mechanic whose owned an 8.1 Silverado for a while now and has worked on and driven several V10 Super Dutys and Excursions. I'm very familiar with the Ford Mod Motor architechture and know how they run when running their best. I've also discussed the differences of these two choices with the Ford V10 owners.

Here's what I think: Find a 8.1 rig you like and don't ever look back. The Ford mod motors, v10 esp., are dogs and get crap for mileage to boot. They last dependably when cared for but cost a ton more to maintain and repair. Because they do have more stupid failures (coils, pcv rubber, plugs ejecting) and everything is much harder to repair than on the 8.1. Less power, worse mileage, not as dependable, more expensive to own. I don't know why you would choose the Ford.

I don't have an anti Ford agenda, though I could because I've owned and worked on plenty of their problem childs in the past, I'm just telling you like it is.

2001 Siverado 2500 HD SBCC in Black

Complete frame up front end rebuild with Cognito: Leveling Kit, HD tie-rods, P&I arm braces, sway-bar links. Rancho shocks, Energy suspension control arm bushings.
Show mods: Goodmark SS cowl hood, Black Diamond plate: Ranch Hand bumpers, toolbox, and bed rails. Pocket Flares.

My 8.1 is great. 180,000 miles and still going strong. Have a general contractor, I work with, who had two Ford vans with the v-10s. They were gas pigs, slow and spit spark plugs. He traded them in for Diesel Ford vans. He said it was the best move he made.

Ask anyone who has ever changed spark plugs on an 8.1, and the V10, and you'll have your answer.

I agree with manic. I have never been a fan of Ford's gas motors. I work on them quite often in our fleet and would not buy one for all the same reasons mentioned above.

If you buy the Ford in the end, keep checking the spark plugs to make sure they are not loose, they like to loosen up on them as there isnt alot of thread holding them in. Then when they pop put they take the thread with it.

I was a Ford guy and drove a 1 ton V10 Ford for a while when working a construction job and liked it. Test drove the new Ford V10's, GM gassers (6.0L and 8.1L and the DMax) when I bought a new truck back in 2004. I drove the 6.8L Ford V10 with an automatic and a manual trans., but ultimately decided on the 8.1L. After owning it for 8+ years I feel the Ford is the better truck (holds up better), but I like the 8.1L better. Slightly better MPG's and a little better power, especially noticeable when towing heavy.
