Easist way if you dont want to get rid of your muffs is put a resonater behind the muffs. basicly they are just a short straight thru glass pack. Gets rid if the anoying drone and cackle and stil have a good throaty roar.
If you want new muffs IMO flowmaster 70 series sound better than 40 series on a BBC. Adding a crossover or H pipe will also help too.

A crossover pipe of some kind will get rid of the big block nasty noise. The longer the exhaust the worse it is. My 84 has it bad too.

Yep... Had 3" duals on my 8.1 with Flowmaster Delta Flow 40s and it got raspy as the RPMs went up. I cut in a custom H-pipe and it solved ALOT of that.....

Sorry for the late response....
Yeah it was tight... Mine was all home made. My dual 3" headpipes were/are 4" OC. But ahead of my mufflers, I cut about a 6" section of pipe out of each bank. Then on the bench I took two pipes with 3" id ends on each end, and cut a short piece of 3" pipe to fit between them. I cut the sides out of each head pipe, fit the short 3" connector between them, and mig'd it all together. I'll try and find some old pics of it.... It you still need them!?!
