Cool! I wonder if it will spread. I imagine Chrysler is the guinea pig. Others will follow if it is a big hit. Imagine the possibilities. Tahoe, Suburban, 1500 Silverado all with a diesel option.

It's a lot of money for an engine designed for towing...wrapped in a truck that's not.

I see this leading to idiots towing 15-20K trailers with their half tons...because "it's got a diesel, it can tow anything!!!?!1!!" Syndrome.

the pentastar gets the same mpg in the cherokee as it does the ram. Its safe to say the ram will get the same as the cherokee with this diesel. Man a 1500 that gets 30mpg with good torque, thats pretty damn awesome

Its not a Cummins, so there goes their biggest selling point.
Hopefully they do a better job with this diesel than the previous ones.

It's about time. We have needed small diesel trucks and SUV's for a long time. The market for such a vehicle is wide open.

Don't you worry Mark, the new Chevy's have a GCWR up to 15,000 lbs So they are already 3/4 of the way to HEAVY loads.

I "think"that is the same or similar engine that was used in the limited run Jeep Libertys no ?
It was a good engine, the trannys were crap and the emissions garbage but AFAIK the engine was solid.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that. I followed some online friends who owned one (and towed exclusively with it, the only reason they bought it) and their ownership was dismal - constant problems, it was in the dealership more than it was on the road it seemed, and half the dealers amazingly enough didn't even know that Chrysler sold a diesel Liberty when they showed up looking for warranty work. The sold it in about a year and a half IIRC and went with a gasser Tundra - the Jeep diesel experience left such a bad taste in their mouth.

With that story firmly in mind I recommended a co-worker DIDN'T buy a diesel Liberty when he expressed interest in one about 3 months ago. He bought it anyways, and true to form it's spent more time in the shop than on the road - injector issues, blown turbo, and now apparently camshaft failure which may or may not (presuming it's an interference engine?) took the valvetrain and heads with it - the thing is in parts at the shop now.
