coolant loss when changing trans lines
Can someone tell me why there's engine coolant pouring out when I am changing the transmission lines?? Screwed the fittings from the radiator and pulled the lines out, all of sudden coolant starts pouring out....

yea it surprised me too. i think the coolant goes around the outside and the tranny fluid runs through the center to help cool it. thats how i think it works.

the black rings on the trans line have a hair pin clip in them that holds the trans cooler line in place. makes for quick install on the assembly line. the hex on the fitting is for when the radiator is built/serviced s the end caps are plastic not brass or aluminum. there is also a thin black rubber "seal" just behind the hex as the trans "cooler" is a completely separate piece and not soldered to the cap of like the radiators of the past. be careful that the trans cooler does not fall into the end cap and now will have to be fished back into place. the hex screw fitting is all that holds the cooler in place

Thanks you guys, read a ton of posts on here and didn't remember seeing anything about coolant loss until I saw Deisahl's post about having to top off the coolant and he got an air pocket or something. Just wanted to make sure I didn't break something or have a major issue. Thanks for explaining the "New Cooler" vs. the older style, makes more sense now.

i was like you i read all kinds of posts and they said they lost alittle tranny fluid but no one really said anything about coolant loss. when i changed mine the coolant came out of the top and not the bottom but i had a leak after install and when i took it off nothing came out the top but as soon as i took the bottom off it poured out. but its all good now

Yeah, I unscrewed the top and was trying to do the bottom fitting when coolant stared pouring out, quite the surprise.... I did put tape on the fitting threads after reading your post, so thank you. I just added two gallons of coolant but haven't run the truck to complete the process. Added 1 qt of trams fluid, still need to get the trans warm to top it off too.

are you guys trying to ''unscrew'' the bulkhead connectors on the plastic rad tanks?,,if so ''STOP'' take off the plastic line dust covers and the ''little wire clip'' and pull the trans line out, these are ''quick disconect'' lines-they don't unscrew

yes we did. we upgraded to hydraulic lines so we have to put a different kind of fitting on. they just screw out. mine were not that tight at all.
