shifting hard/ reverse to drive

i have a 2003 crew cab with the allison in it. yesterday i noticed that when i would shift from reverse to drive that it would shift really hard. also, on my gauges, the little line under the letters would not be lit up when it did that. tonight, i noticed that my backup lights would not come on untill that line would light up. the transmission shift just fine out on the road, it only does it when going from reverse to drive or drive to reverse. looking for any help on this before i tear up my allison.

I'd start with the NSBU. Pretty common issue on the 5 speeds.

Does the line ever show?

n.s.b.u.

maybe or could be the starter switch also i replaced the nsbu 3 times before finding out the starter switch was burning the nsbu out by not sending a proper voltage signal $35 at the zone in store item but your best bet would be a voltage tester and test the tcm wiring harness also can be the parking sensor on the steering column where the shifting lever contacts it in park best bet run diognostics first then go from there and if you need to know how-to you are at the best place to learn

thanks for the replys. this started this on friday night and continued thru saturday. sunday morning i go out and everything is fine. drove around sunday and also to work this morning and everything is still ok. just went out to lunch and it started acting up again. could the nsbu act up one minute and then later be all right? i am just trying to keep from going to the dealership and paying 60.00 hour and then having them tell me they can not find anything wrong with it.

Yes, NSBU and ignition switch can both be intermittent.

drove it to work this morning, everything was fine. had to run an errand and when i went to park it, it was like it was in neutral. would not go in drive or reverse. dash displayed "shift range inhibited". i shut it off for about 10 minutes and then fired it back up and everything was ok. i drove it about a mile and a half to the dealer. they will work on it in the morning. just what i needed for the holidays.

My 2004 is doing the same exact thing. NSBU, buy one tomorrow. BTW 60 an hour is cheap! 100 at the local GMC dealer. I'm doing it myself.
