Truck has 275,000 miles on the original transmission starting noticing something odd. When running down the highway trans temp is 150. Today I get into town and start making delivery stops, truck sits in park for about 5 minutes per stop. Outside temp this morning was 36 after the 2nd stop i noticed the trans temp going up by the end of my 6th stop it was at 200!! I jumped in and headed back home about a 45 mile drive down the freeway and it cooled back down to 150.
Trans fluid is at the top of the hot mark when I checked it in park and the trans was warmed up gauge showing 165, any ideas?
its from carquest.... supposed to be wix rebranded and boxed for them. Same as the fluid. As long as im not getting a CEL there shouldnt be anything destroyed in the transmission right?
Its not good idea to keep it that hot obviously. Did you change all your fluid over to Dex VI? Again make sure your fluid level is INBETWEEN hot and cold. Not all the way up as that will indeed make it get hot. Do a search on here about it and also the Dex VI and seals.
I did not change all the fluid, just changed the spin on filter and then added 5/8 of a quart through the dipstick tube. I'm pretty sure its just over filled as this problem didnt start until I had added the extra fluid through the dipstick tube! Thanks for the help
Isnt it bad to mix the Dex 6 with Dex 3 though? Maybe someone add to this or Im wrong..thought I read it somewhere as being bad for these older style trans.
I read the same thing after I had already done it, this is my first dmax all my other diesel's have had the cummins. How can I fix this? I would drain and re-fill but I'm not sure if the trans is starting to slip in 5th or not and dont want to waste the money on a drain and re-fill if the trans is just going to die soon
I really dont think adding that little amount will hurt it personally but Im no trans expert...just wanted to make sure you dont add any more to it.
