Stuck in third gear?

At times when loaded and pulling up hill the trans will go from 5th to 3rd and stay there. Service Engine Soon light comes on. Even when I come to a stop the trans. will not down shift. If I try to take off its in 3rd gear. And it has no reverse. I shut the engine off, restart engine SES light is off and trans is back to normal. A scan shows a code set for improper ratio in 5th gear?? (no change in tire size from stock)
Any suggestion?

it could be going into limp mode or a problem with the nsbu switch on the transmission

The 2wd in your sig?
Any power adders or other mods to the truck?
Have you owned it from new or bought it used?
When was the spin-on filter changed last?
improper ratio in 5th gear typically means your slipping the clutches. That's not good and they will probably need to be replaced, but lets see if we can found out why first.

Why would it go into limp mode?
What is the NSBU switch?

1) Yes it is two wheel drive
2) power adders, Preditor set on 65 hp setting , 4" exhaust, K&N intake.
3) bought truck last July 100k, now has 135k
4) both spin on and filter in pan changed after the first time it happened.
It sure doesn't feel like its slipping, tach stays at 2000 rpm and truck stays at 70 mph. I can accelerate and its pulls up slowly no sign of slipping at all.

limp in mode as you guys call it is the trans going to default programing from a code,NSBU is the switch on the dvr's side of the trans that is on the shifter shaft,you need to get the truck scanned ,thats it.

You might feel it, I didn't.
The TCM senses it. set's a code to tell you and puts the tranny in "Limp home" mode.
Load the stock tune back in and you should be good. If you want to run the predator you will need to have the tranny beefed-up.

It sounds to me like you're slipping the C3 clutches most likely. If you're towing or loaded heavy on the 65 setting you need to either back the power down or upgrade the trans.

I'll try getting the computer set back to stock settings. I'll have to take it back to the dealer to have it done. On my last trip while stopped in Austin TX at a Super 8 Motel some dirtbag broke into my truck and stole a bunch of stuff out of it, one of which was the Preditor. I had the factory alarm set but since this low life broke the passenger side window and never opened the door the alarm didn't sound off.
