Leaking allison transmission

I have a 2001 Chevy 2500hd with the duramax with the 5 speed allison transmission, which has 172K on it.Latly, my transmisson started to leak bell housing. Dealer said it could be the torque converter, but when i looked in the transmission when i was at my buddies shop, it looked to be behind that. It looked like it was the transmission pump seal. Now today, i parked my truck and came back about an hour later and i had a huge puddle of atf fluid. it was about 2 ft wide by about 8-10 ft long. There was alot of transmission fluid. I just filled it up when i got home. I am bring my truck to get fixed by a family member next weekend or so. But i am woundering if any one else had this problem. I dont really beat on the truck too bad and usually only tow in the summer. I just hope its not something too bad.
Also, just today, i have been getting a clunking noise when i let off the gas or when i starting giving it some gas.

Could be a cracked rear housing, U joints are the clunk, which caused the crack

It is the U joints that are clunking, but the clunking came after the leaking of the transmission. I dont think its a crack....or hopefully its not. It looks like its a cracked seal around the transmission pump...not sure yet. Im taking the transmission soon.

I have heard of torque converter clutches becoming warn and therefore slip while driving in lockup, this creates a lot of heat causing the front pump seal to overheat and fail . This maybe something that you should investigate .

My 2002 (109,000 miles) just went into the shop yesterday with the same problem! Just got a call from the dealer confirming that it looked like the front pump seal, but they are still investigating. I should know more this afternoon. BTW, I had my Edge showing torque converter slip and had not noticed any problem with the converter locked.

I havent had any problem with my torque converter....and we looked at it and it seemed to be in good condition. The only thing it looks like it is would be the seal on the transmission pump. Im fixing my truck next weekend...

Well, it turns out that the shop really has no idea where it was leaking, but they did have the torque converter pressure tested and found no leaks :-(
I was hoping to upgrade the tranny while it was out, especially if the insurance would pay for a converter......
The plan is (I think) to put a seal kit in and put it back together.
Now i have to make up my mind on if I want to do the rest on my dime.......(Here at Christmas, my dime looks an awful lot like a penny..........)

That sucks man....and the local chevy dealer had the same problem. They look at my transmission and said it could be either the torque converter or some sort of cracked seal. Then me and my buddy went to his work and looked the the transmission our self....we could tell it wasnt the torque converter...and that i was the transmission pump leaking. Now that we figured that out....i have to deal with that and with my sqeeeky/clunking u-joints....hopefully its something easy....i also want to put a suncoast transmission upgrade...but it doesnt look like ill be able to right now
