Do Higher RPM's = Lower EGT's Towing Uphill
I'm towing 8000#'s up a 4 mile, 6% grade. Will 4th gear and it's higher RPM's lower my EGT's? Thanks for the help...

Do you have guages? I tow 15,500 with my truck and so far 1225 is about as high as I have gone. I would think with only 8k you will be fine.
But to totally answer your question, yes rpm's lower EGT's. As the engine lugs down in 6th you can watch EGT's rise fast, as soon as it shifts down temps drop fast. Temps will still rise again as rpm's get excessive and you are on the backside of the power curve.

Yes,
If you are lugging up the hill in 5th geare it will increase EGT's, kicking it down to 4th will pull the hill better and should lower EGT's.

I tow similar weight to you (boat and gear) up 4-6% grades (but longer). I'm running a good PPE tune as well. Gearing down help but if you have to back of the go pedal a little otherwise the EGT's will be real similar. I've notice little difference between 6th and 5th, if I go to 4th I am obviously slowing down to keep the engine RPM from getting to high. You look stock so you shouldn't have to worry about it. After market exhaust will help a lot!! Good luck!

it's that in a lower gear the truck has an easier time keeping speed... so your foot isn't in it as much in 4th gear or 3rd gear so the EGT's come down because you're not feeding it as much fuel trying to maintain speed going up hills.
You'll see, when you downshift the pedal position comes up with your foot because you dont have to have it to the floorboard keeping speed. the less fuel you feed it the lower the EGT's are.

They generally climb back up though. The higher rpms and lower gear help but not much. 8,000 lbs is a walk in the park for an LBZ. I pull 14-15,000 lbs regularly and don't have trouble. ALthough it is much flatter here.
