Difference between 2500 & 3500?

What makes a 3500 a 3500? I tow with my '05 Dmax Silverado 2500 and am real close & sometimes over my payload with a 2000 lb tongue weight 5ver camper. My truck only has a little over 50K miles, so I don't want to trade up, wondering if there are any mods can be made to increase payload. Someone told me the only real difference is the rear axle & suspension. If that's true, can you swap out the axle? Apologize in advance if I'm the wrong area to ask this question. Thanks for any help.

Leafs, tires, rims.

If you have concerns, just run some airbags.

I've got load range E on it now, the tire guy tells me that's the highest load range, of course double it with dually, I guess.

2000lb in the bed ain't phasing it.
265's have a higher weight rating than factory 245's, and it's what the 3500 SRW's come with.

You cannot change the GVWR that comes from the factory...no matter what gadgets you put on the truck.

Thanks for the help so far, guys. With all due respect, I'm not really thinking "gadgets," I'm thinking major mods that can be realistically done. Considering a new truck could set me back $20-30 K or more w/trade in, something I could do for a few thousand. The engine, tranny, body & frame are the same, right, so what's the major difference? It's payload/weight on rear axle that's got me flummoxed. My main thing is I'd like to put aux fuel tank so I don't have to stop every 200-250 miles for refill. I figure that would add another 400-500 lbs. depending on tank size. That would put me well over 9200 GVWR. If I can't do it, I can't do it.

As Pat said buying some airbags would be the best mod for you. The 2500HD is the same GVWR as the 88-98 body single wheel tonners were.

Weight ratings are there for a reason....air bags are a horrible idea for a band aid.

No they're not--IDENTICAL.My 3500 has 1 more spring in the rear,265's over 245's,and a wider rim over my 2500.9900GVW vs.9200GVW.
