catalytic converter function on LBZ

What function does the catlytic converter have on the LBZ? Its not regulated by an 02 sensor, and if it reduces soot, would blocking the EGR cause more exhaust soot--thereby clogging up?

The purpose of the catalytic converter on the LBZ is the same as it is on a gasoline engine, to burn any unburnt fuel using a catalyst coated surface thereby reducing pollution. It is not a diesel particulate filter, and I have not heard of a catalytic converter getting clogged. Hope this helps.

Unlike a gasoline engine, diesel exhaust contains soot. My question refers to blocking the EGR in that the soot would no longer recirculate & get trapped in the ceramic catalyst, unlike older LB7 models that did not have any cat--thus the soot was free to leave the tailpipe.

Since I have not heard of a modern cat getting clogged, I assume that the passages are fairly large. Anyway, the EGR only recirculates a small fraction of your exhaust, so I doubt it has much impact on how much soot passes through.

If I was to take the cat off, will a code be set? If a code was to be set will the finger stick w/blocker plate keep a code from being set? Also would mpg be affected? Hopefully for the better! I'm still learning, this is my first diesel.

Buckeye 1268, Chances are if you take your cat off you will get a cel.
The fingerstick and blocker plate will take care of this. You could try it without and see if you get a cel.

My dealer told me removing the cat would void my warranty. When I purchased EFI Live from McRat I asked him about the cat. He told me the real restriction is the muffler. The cat really doesn't restrict flow that much. Just my .02
