decreased milleage after dealer updates
Mods, sorry if this is in the wrong thread.
So when I bought my 2002 Dmax back in 2004 I was getting a solid 23mpg on the highway and an easy 17-18, driving around town like fuel was free. My truck currently has 137K on the clock and I am barley able to squeeze 14mpg around town now. At around 60K the dealer replaced the fuel pressure regulator, then the injector pump, then finally they realized the problem was two faulty injectors so they replaced all eight. Warranty covered everything so I did not really think much of it. Each time the truck went into the shop the dealer would flash the ECM(?) I was told that this was to offer any current software changes that GM offered. After the first flash I complained that my truck did not run the same. The low end seemed to have decreased after the flash. Then after the second and third flash the decrease was minor if at all. To be honest after the second and third flash it could have just "been in my head" But I did notice and real change after the first. So, after checking my milage again the decrease in performance was affirmed. When I went back to the dealer and complained I was told that none of this should have changed. The only updates were for drivability. When I asked them to elaborate I felt their answers were mostly leading in circles. So, after all this time I have researched the net and have discovered some info relating to updates/flashes that are designed to tweak our motors to lessen emmisions. The byproduct is less fuel milage. So I guess my question is have any of you experienced the same when getting the dealer updates? Anyone have any luck with sending your ECM off to have it "reprogrammed"? I am running the Edge w/attitude and tried it on setting 0, 1, 2 & 3 and have seen no improvment. I have tried fuel additives like Howes, soltron, power service, lucas and most recently BG244K which by the way seemed to make my engine idle smoother. I have not checked for any increases in milage but seat of my pants driving tells me there have been little to no increases. I would also like to note that my engine fires right up, no smoking at idle, runs perfect with no present issues. Does not consume oil between service which range from 4000 to 7000 mile intervals. I run delo 15-40 and at the 4K mark the oil still looks very clean on the dip stick. Any advice as to how to up my milelage? Would sending my ECM in to have it retuned be a good idea? Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately you are correct- it seems every time there is an "update" flashed into our trucks the mpg's generally go down. Most people (including myself) ask that it not be updated if/when it HAS to go in the shop. I know many people have had good luck with reprogramming the ECM's, but you want to make sure to do your homework as there are some BS programmers out there.... May want to consider EFI.

Any advice on where to turn for a reprogram? I have heard good things as well as not so good things about EFI live. I am hoping to find someone that found a way to revert back to original "factory" programs. Then let the Edge do its job.

EFI is probably the best software program out there- where have you heard that EFI is not good? Granted there may be some "poor" EFI tuner/dealers out there, but do some research, ask people that you see on here with EFI who did their programming, etc. and see how the service was, if there was any problems, etc.

Do a search for Idaho Rob to reprogram your ECM for you. His business is Adrenaline Truck Performance in Idaho.

Just buy a PPE economy and be happy, very simple to use and should give you 3-4 back esp with the #'s you are getting now. What size tire?

He will have much better mileage luck with EFI when programmed properly- Not downing PPE (run it myself), but I didn't gain much mileage with mine.
