DPF removal before tune??
Spoke with Matt at Danville Performance today in regards to getting EFI with a DSP5 tune for my LMM. Only issue with them being ~180 miles away is that I'll be needing to put my exhaust on prior to taking it down to them. I ordered a MBRP 5" cat delete with muffler. I'm aware that the truck could go in to a de-rated power level once it detects the DPF not being there. Matt said I could get by up to ~1500 miles before that would be the case.
I do trust them to know what they are talking about, however when the truck wants to do a regen ~500 miles what will happen? Think I could make the trip? Anyone else go through this minor dilemma?

I don't think it will go 1500 miles with the dpf off and not tuned. I don't think I would chance going "~180 miles"...if you're getting a DSP5 switch, then just have them set one of the positions to stock with dpf on, and get the tuning adjusted later

Thanks for the response, Pat. Only issue I see with doing that is I was going to have them dyno tune it since I was making the trip. Otherwise I would just order an AutoCal from ATP, which is still an option that I'm open to.

I would NOT chance driving that far you could end up with going into limp mode.
If your doing the exhaust yourself then I would suggest installing the tune yourself. If your concerned about installing the DSP5 switch then have Danville install it for you, then dyno it. Rob can make the first tune to run on until you get the switch installed. ATP Idaho Rob autocal is a very good choice for EFI tuning having plug and play EFI. I went with just one tune 40 HP TT so I did not have to deal with the switch, also I did not want to deal with the switch. ATP was my 2nd EFI tuner over a 3 month period. You can put more than one tune on the AutoCal with no DSP, you just have to load the tunes one at a time.

Thanks for your input, D R C, who was your first EFI tuner? Why the switch to ATP? After some thought last night, I'm going to go with ATP or DT. I would like to have a smoke tune for fun, DT said they would do one, just have to use your brain with it. Will ATP do a smoke tune? IIR, when EFI first came out, Rob said he wouldn't. I'm just torn between the two because one says 150rwhp is safe on the trans, and the other says 130rwhp, as long as neither are abused.

A few people that use these big HP trans safe tunes usually end up building the trans.
The big HP is awesome to have but they can trash out the trans, if your not careful. My previous diesel I had it on level 4, it was something like 90-100 HP driving pretty easy, got on it a little to merge on the freeway, trans slipped. That ended that nothing over 40 hp, for me anyway.

Thanks for the replies DRC. I ran my bullydog on my LBZ on the 110??hp tune most of the time and never had an issue. Never went WOT in 5th and 6th with it, and did a manual downshift before any on-ramp romps or passing other folks. Truck is going to be parked for the winter unless I absolutely need to drive it, hoping I'll be able to get by with a TransGo Jr. Only time will tell if I need to whip out the checkbook...

Of course the Allison is a much better trans than what I had in my 03 Ford 6.0.
![]() I'm retired so hot rodding around is behind me now, besides my reaction time is not as good these days. ![]() I did the Trans Go Jr and the Allison deep pan in mine last year the change was not very noticable, but its in there now.

This in no way is a "plug" for any particular vendor but, I had the same dilemma. Went to duramax tuner's website and for the price listed you get all the tunes they already dyno'd and one of them is a dsp 5 tune. Don't have to visit a dyno to make that happen, you can download the tune and then install the exhaust!
